I am a Eberly Postdoctoral Scholar in Physics at Penn State. My research involves xenon purity physics and nuclear recoil (NR) calibrations of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Dark Matter Experiment. Sufficient understanding of xenon purity is needed for event reconstruction in the xenon time projection chamber (TPC) and NR calibrations allow understanding of detector response for an anticipated Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) signal, which is expected to occur via nuclear recoils. LZ is located nearly a mile underground in South Dakota and features 10 tonnes of xenon for operation. LZ achieved a world-leading sensitivity to WIMP-like dark matter and continues to take data to further improve sensitivity.
