Workshop on "Low Energy" Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics with IceCube

March 19-20, 2009

The Center for Particle Astrophysics will host a workshop on "Low Energy Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics with IceCube's Deep Core Sub-Array." The workshop will be held March 19-20, 2009 on the Penn State University Park campus. The number of people attending will be kept small to foster an intimate working environment with ample time for open discussion.

In early 2010, IceCube will have fully deployed "IceCube Deep Core," a sub-detector comprised of the seven innermost IceCube strings, augmented by six additional strings located mainly below 2100 m in the clearest ice. Deep Core will be a densely instrumented 15-Mton region of IceCube with greatly enhanced sensitivity to dim, low energy events with a neutrino energy threshold of a few GeV, while the outer IceCube strings will form an extremely effective active veto against down-going cosmic-ray muons. This potent combination will open up a range of interesting neutrino physics opportunities at Ev ~ 5 GeV and higher.

The workshop format will have presentations followed by in-depth discussions of the theoretical and experimental aspects of these opportunities. We anticipate covering topics such as:

  • Indirect WIMP detection with low energy neutrinos
  • Neutrino oscillations at Ev ~ 5 GeV
  • Other fundamental neutrino properties (e.g., neutrino hierarchy)
  • Point sources of low energy neutrinos
      - GRB searches
      - Other point source searches
      - Neutrino-triggered searches
  • Atmospheric neutrino production physics (viz., charm/prompt)
  • Tau neutrinos with Deep Core
  • Multimessenger astronomy
